Meal Information

The TumsUp Shepherd’s Pie is a good source of iron and calcium. One serve provides almost 1.6mg of Iron per serve, promoting healthy blood cells, facilitating oxygen delivery to muscles for children to play and be physically active. Including meals high in iron are important because many children do not eat enough red meat and iron deficiency anemia is common. It contains 1/3 the RDI for Calcium which is vital for strong bones and teeth and a whole range of body processes including muscle contraction.

This meal also contributes substantial amounts of all B-Vitamins including Thiamin, Riboflavin, Folate and more then half the RDI for Niacin and B6. These vitamins are essential for converting food into energy and optimising metabolic pathways including those involved in DNA synthesis and repair. This meal provides more than 3/4 the RDI for of Magnesium, which is involved in many biological processes within muscle and is necessary for bone growth, development and maintenance. This meal contributes amounts of Selenium and Vitamin E which are both important for efficient detoxification pathways that neutralise free radicals and protect the body from a wide range of diseases. There is a beneficial provision of Iodine which is essential for thyroid hormones, metabolism and for normal growth and development.

The Shepherd’s Pie is an excellent source of Potassium which is an important mineral because many modern or convenience foods are high in salt and by increasing intakes of potassium this can help mitigate the negative effects of excess sodium in the diet.

The Omega-3 fatty acid content of this meal is good, which are essential for many biological functions including brain development and optimal immune function. Meals containing high amounts of Omega-3 are important as post industrial food production has lead to much greater amounts of pro inflammatory Omega-6 fatty acids in the diet.

The TumsUp Shepherd’s Pie is a source of fiber. It provides ¼ the amount considered adequate for a young child. Fiber is important for bowl health and new research is showing the importance of healthy gut flora and the impact the gut micro-biome has on many body systems including immune modulation.
